El ZLC2000 (o WZ506 en su designación industrial) es el vehículo de combate de infantería aerotransportado desarrollado por NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) para las fuerzas paracaidistas del Ejército Popular de Liberación (EPL) chino. El vehículo es susceptible de ser lanzado desde aviones de transporte medios o grandes usando paracaídas múltiples. Lleva en servicio con las Fuerzas Aerotransportadas desde 2003. El despliegue del ZLC2000 ha mejorado sensiblemente la capacidad ofensiva de dichas fuerzas.

Desde mediados de los años 90 se sabe que el ELP venía buscando un vehículo de combate aerotransportado que mejorase la capacidad de despliegue de sus fuerzas móviles. Informaciones no confirmadas sugirieron que el EPL trató con Rusia la posibilidad de un acuerdo de compra o incluso la licencia de fabricación de la serie rusa de vehículos aerotransportados BMD. Sin embargo las negociaciones no fructificaron y el EPL decidió desarrollar este vehículo en el propio país a finales de los años 90.

El primer prototipo del ZLC2000 fue probablemente entregado entre 2000 y 2003, y el desarrollo del sistema de lanzamiento K/STW-17 se terminó en 2004. El vehículo fue visto por vez primera en un ejercicio de las fuerzas aerotransportadas del EPL a inicios de 2005, confirmándose que estaba ya en servicio activo. Posteriormente recibió mucha atención duarante el ejercicio conjunto chino-ruso 'Misión de Paz 2005' celebrado entre agosto y septiembre de 2005. Pese a las especulaciones de que este vehículo pudiese ser una copia del BMD-3 ruso, un examen riguroso indicó que su chasis era nuevo y sus sistemas de armas diferentes. Su cañón de 30 mm. difiere del diseño ruso usado en los BMD-3. Es posible, sin embargo, que el vehículo cuente con ciertas tecnologías de origen ruso, especialmente el sistema de caída por medio de paracaídas múltiples.

Las fuentes indican que el ZLC2000 se ha fabricado en al menos tres versiones: mando y control, vehículo de tropas y lanzamisiles anticarro. La versión de mando y control posee un casco más alto para alojar a la oficialidad. La versión de transporte de infantería está armada con una torre que integra un cañón de 30 mm. y un lanzador anticarro HJ-73C. La versión anticarro está armada con el lanzador HJ-8. El vehículo puede ser lanzado desde aparatos de transporte como el IL-76MD sin palé. Cada IL-76MD puede transportar hasta tres vehículos. Los tripulantes y dotación son lanzados por separado desde las salidas del avión.

El ZLC2000 posee un casco grande en forma de caja. El motor va instalado en la parte delantera derecha con la escotilla del conductor a la izquierda, justo delante de la escotilla del comandante, que monta un mira óptica con visión nocturna. La torreta individual se situa en medio del vehículo y posee apertura para el artillero sobre su techo. El compartimiento de tropa, que puede alojar cuatro soldados, se localiza tras la torre. La parte posterior del vehículo tiene una única escotilla de salida. Hay además seis ventanillas de observación y portillos de defensa (tres en el lado izquierdo, dos en el derecho y uno en la puerta posterior), que permiten a los ocupantes hacer fuego con fusiles y ametralladoras en movimiento. El tren de rodaje se compone de cinco ruedas espaciadas desigualmente a cada lado, tres rodillos de retorno, una rueda tractora delantera y una tensora trasera. Posiblemente el vehículo sea totalmente anfibio y sea impulsado en el agua mediante sus propias cadenas. La suspensión es de tipo hidroneumático y puede ajustarse para adaptarla al tipo de terreno. En el lanzamiento la suspensión se pliega al mínimo para reducir el impacto al aterrizar. El motor es diésel atmosférico.

El armamento principal del ZLC2000 consiste en un cañón de 30 mm. y un lanzamisiles anticarro HJ-73C montado sobre la torre con tres misiles en reserva. Los misiles tienen un alcance máximo de 3.000 m. y sus últimas versiones pueden ser equipadas con ojivas de distinto tipo. Este modelo de torre ha sido ya comercializada por NORINCO con el nombre de Red Arrow 73 Missile/30 mm Gun Combined Turret Weapon Module (GCTWM) (Módulo de Sistema de Armas Combinado para Torre Misil Flecha Roja 73/Cañón de 30 mm.). El cañón puede girar 360º y dispone de 350 proyectiles. La munición incluye proyectiles de alto poder explosivo (HE) y perforante (AP) alojada en la torre. El artillero dispones de mira óptica con canal de visión térmica para el combate nocturno. Se desconoce si el cañón es estabilizado. El armamento secundario consiste en una ametralladora coaxial de 7'62 mm. y el sistema de defensa pasiva principal consta de dos lanzafumígeros de tres tubos a cada lado de la torre. El blindaje del ZLC2000 se ve limitada por las restricciones de peso para su lanzamiento. Con un peso de 8 toneladas, se supone que su protección es escasa y sólo resiste impactos de armas de poco calibre.

The ZLC2000 (with industrial designation WZ506) is the airborne infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) developed by NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) for the PLA airborne forces. The vehicle is capable of air dropping using multiple parachutes from medium or large transport aircraft. The vehicle has been in service with the PLAAF Airborne Corps since 2003, and was spotted during the ‘Peace Mission 2005’ China-Russia joint exercise. The deployment of the ZLC2000 has greatly enhanced the offensive capability of the PLA airborne forces.

The PLA was reported to have been seeking an airborne fighting vehicle to enhance the offensive capability of its airborne forces since the mid-1990s. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the PLA approached Russia on a possible purchase deal or even licensed production of a version of its BMD series airborne IFV. Nevertheless the negotiations led to nowhere and eventually the PLA decided to develop the vehicle indigenously in the late 1990s.

The first prototype of the ZLC2000 was possibly delivered between 2000 and 2003, and the development of the K/STW-17 vehicle air dropping system was completed in 2004. The vehicle was first spotted in the PLA airborne forces exercise in early 2005, confirming the vehicle was already in operational service. Later the vehicle enjoyed a high degree of publicity during the ‘Peace Mission 2005’ China-Russia joint exercise held between August and September 2005. Despite the speculations that the vehicle might be a copy of the Russian BMD-3, close examinations of the vehicle indicated that it is in fact a new design with different hull layout and weapon system. The Chinese 30mm cannon differs to the Russian design used by the BMD-3. It is possible, however, that the vehicle contains certain Russian technologies, particularly the multiple parachute air dropping system.

It was reported that the vehicle was made in at least three versions: command and control, IFV, and ATGM carrier. The command and control version features a higher rear hull to accommodate staffs. The IFV version is armed with a turret that combines a 30mm cannon with a HJ-73C ATGM launcher. The dedicated ATGM carrier version is armed with the HJ-8 ATGM. The vehicle can be air-dropped from transport aircraft such as IL-76MD without a pallet. Each IL-76MD can carry up to three vehicles. The vehicle crews and passengers are dropped separately from the passenger hatches of the aircraft.

The vehicle has a large box-shape hull. The power pack is installed at the front right of the vehicle and the driver’s hatch at the front left, directly in front of the commander’s hatch which mounts an optical sight with night vision input. The single-man turret is located in the middle of vehicle, with the gunner’s hatch located on the roof of the turret. The troop compartment to accommodate four paratroopers is located behind the turret. A single exit door is located in the rear of the vehicle. There are six observation windows and firing ports (three on the left, two on the right, and one on the exit door), allowing the paratroopers to fire assault rifles and squad machine-guns from inside the vehicle while on the move. The vehicle has five unevenly spaced road wheels on each side, with three track support rollers, a front drive sprocket and a rear idler. The vehicle is possibly fully amphibious, propelled through water by its tracks. The suspension is of a hydro-pneumatic type and can be adjusted to suit the type of terrain being crossed. During the air dropping, the tracks of the vehicle was retracted to the minimum position to reduce the impact during landing. The vehicle is powered by a air-cooled diesel engine.

The main armament of the ZLC2000 is a 30mm cannon and a turret-mounted Red Arrow HJ-73C antitank guided missile (ATGM) launcher (with 3 spare missiles). This has a maximum range of 3,000 m and latest versions of the missile can be fitted with various types of warhead.This turret has already been marketed by NORINCO under the name of Red Arrow 73 Missile/30 mm Gun Combined Turret Weapon Module (GCTWM). The cannon has a full 360° traverse and 350 rounds of ready use. Ammunition includes High-Explosive (HE) and Armour-Piercing (AP) rounds carried in the turret. The gunner is equipped with a optical sight with thermal image channel for night combat. It is not known whether the gun is stabilised. Secondary weapon includes a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. There are two sets of three-barrel smoke grenade on each side of the turret. The vehicle’s armour protection is limited by its weight restrictions for air dropping. With a combat weight of 8 tonnes, the vehicle’s armour is supposed to be thin and can only resist small calibre weapons.
