En este artículo describo cómo fabriqué una torreta Crocker & Wheeler para un AT-11 Kansan a 1/72. Esta es una posible solución casera para conseguir piezas transparentes de formas no muy complicadas cuando no las hay disponibles en el mercado.

In this article I describe how I made a Crocker & Wheeler vacform turret for a 1/72 AT-11 Kansan. This is a home-made solution to get your own clear parts when you can't buy them.

Materiales y herramientas: hojas de acetato (también valen las tapas transparentes de algunas libretas), tijeras, tuerca ciega del diámetro adecuado, mechero y alguna herramienta que nos permita una sujeción fuerte (pinzas, tornillo de banco, etc).

Tools and materials needed: acetate sheets (you can also use thin transparent covers from notebooks and other stationery), scissors, lock nuts of the appropiate size, lighter and any tool to hold the acetate sheet (small vice or clamps).

Primero es conveniente cortar el acetato, que normalmente encontraremos en tamaño A4, a una medida manejable. He cortado una hoja en tres tiras medianas. Seguidamente la sujetaremos adecuadamente de un extremo (o si podemos, de los dos) procurando que esté tensa y lisa.

First, it is advisable to cut the acetate, which you normally find in A4 size, to get a manageable size. I cut the sheet in three strips. Then hold one end (or both if you can) tightly. The sheet must be tense and even.

Como molde he usado una tuerca ciega de 10 mm que al ser metálica no se deforma, pero puede usarse casi cualquier objeto que nos permita obtener la forma deseada. La tuerca va enroscada a su tornillo para asirla cómodamente.

I have used a 0.40-in lock nut as a mold, but you can use almost anything with the adequate shape that you want to get. The bolt will allow you to hold the mold easily.

Calentamos el acetato con el mechero. La llama no debe estar a menos de unos 10 centímetros, pues el plástico se ennegrece y derrite. En dos o tres segundos lograremos que el acetato esté lo suficientemente blando para poder moldearlo.

Heat the acetate sheet with the lighter. The flame must not be very near because the plastic will look burnt and too thin (4 inches approximately or a bit more is enough to get a good result).

Presionamos con la cabeza de la tuerca sobre la hoja con firmeza. Esta operación requiere cierta presteza pues el acetato se enfría rápidamente. Hay que procurar que éste no se caliente demasiado para que no se rompa y que recubra bien el molde sin hacer arrugas. Esperamos unos segundos a que se enfríe y retiramos la tuerca. Con un poco de práctica le cogeremos el tranquillo en pocos minutos.

Quickly press the sheet firmly with the cap of the nut. You just have a few seconds (the time for the acetate to cool down). Three don'ts: don't heat the sheet too much or you will only get a hole, don't move the nut and let it cool and don't get deperate if you fail the first time, with a little practice you will get the knack in a few minutes.

Para cortar la cúpula he usado microsierras de fotograbado, pero pueden usarse tijeras teniendo cuidado de no deformarla pues quedan marcas sobre el transparente. Es conveniente no cortar demasiado al ras y hacer comprobaciones previas en el modelo.

I have used a PE microsaw to cut the part, but a pair of scissors will also do. Be careful not to bend or deform the 'vacform'. Check the part on the model so that you can get a precise cut.
