El SU-100 fue uno de los mejores cazacarros de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Apareció muy al final del conflicto como un avance respecto al SU-85 y, al igual que éste, también usaba el excelente chasis del T-34/85. El SU-100 incorporaba varias mejoras respecto a su antecesor: mayor blindaje frontal, cúpula con visión panorámica y un excelente cañón D-10 de 100 mm. capaz de perforar cualquier blindaje alemán a más de un kilómetro de distancia. Tras el conflicto, diversos países lo incorporaron a sus arsenales hasta los años 70.

The SU-100 was one of the best tank hunters of WWII. It appeared on the battlefield late in the conflict as a clear improvement over the SU-85 and like this it also made use of the excellent T-34/85 chassis. The SU-100 incorporated some advantages over its predecessor: a thicker armoured front plate, a commander's cupola with all-round vision and a superb 100 mm. D-10 gun, capable of penetrating any German armour from more than one kilometre. After the war many countries continued to use this vehicla even until the 1970s.

La maqueta - The kit |

Esta maqueta la inicié hace lo menos 10 años. Tan sólo llevaba montados el chasis, las ruedas, el cañón y escasos fotograbados. Desde entonces casi siempre ha estado en la mesa esperando turno. A la maqueta se le notan un poco los años (el molde es de los 90, pero no es del todo malo). Actualmente el SU-100 de Dragón es claramente superior, mejor incluso que el de Tamiya, por eso para hacer un modelo decente hay que usar fotograbados y reemplazar las horribles cadenas de plástico. El montaje no es complicado, sólo las dos mitades del casco dan problemas para alinearlas, pero nada insalvable. Los fotograbados de Eduard añaden detalles importantes, pero tienen errores en los soportes de los depósitos, que carecen de aletas para soportar los contenedores cilíndricos. El plástico se trabaja bien y el modelo agradece cualquier mejora que se le haga.

I started this kit at least ten years ago. Only the hull, wheels, gun a a few PE bits were built. Since then it has been on my workbench almost all the time waiting for a new opportunity. Zvezda's kit shows its age a bit (the tooling is from the 1990s, but it is not too bad). Today Dragon's SU-100 is clearly better, even better than Tamiya's kit, for this reason it is necessary to use PE parts to get a nicer appearance and change both the gun and the horrible plastic tracks. The building is no challenge, only the two hull halves are a bit difficult to position correctly but nothing to stop the average modeller. Eduard PE set adds important details and enhance the final look, but they also have a mistake in the fuel tank holders, which lack the round fins to hold the tanks. Plastic is nice to work and the final model really pays you back any time you spend on details.

Además de los fotograbados de Eduard, el cañón y las cadenas de Modelkasten añadí las asas de varios tamaños y grosores. Las instrucciones y la maqueta tienen un error en el asa que va en la cúpula del comandante. La pieza es demasiado larga y no iba soldada a los lados de la cúpula, sino encima de ella. Curiosamente, en la ilustración de la caja se ve con la posición correcta. |

In addition to the Eduard PE set, the gun and the Modelkasten tracks I made the handholds in different size and thickness. The instructions and the kit have a mistake in the handhold on the cupola. The kit part is too long and was not welded on the sides of the cupola but it was placed on it. Curiously enough, the boxart shows this hold in the correct position. |

También le dí un poco de textura al exterior de la cámara de combate con masilla de Tamiya. Para imitar las soldaduras me desenvuelvo mejor con la masilla de Vallejo. Como relleno no sirve de gran cosa porque aguanta mal la lija, pero para este tipo de detalles va muy bien y se controla con agua. Una vez seca, los errores se pueden reparar con una cuchilla usada y una lija suave. |

Tamiya putty helped me to texturize the combat room. To make the welding between planks I normally use Vallejo putty. It is a bad filler as it vanishes when you sand but it is useful in this type of details and you can control the excess with water. Once dry, mistakes can be easily mended with an old blade and some slight sanding. |
