Aunque los vehículos que más suelen gustarme son los que tomaron parte en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, recientemente he ido descubriendo otros mucho más actuales que me resultan igualmente inspiradores. Uno de ellos es el LAV-25, un blindado ligero sobre ruedas que ha dado origen a una extensa familia que ha evolucionado con los años en los actuales Stryker, presentes en zonas de combate como Irak o Afghanistán. Tan valiosos han resultado los LAV en sus múltiples variantes, que actualmente aún siguen muchos en servicio en el arsenal estadounidense tras ser sometidos a un programa de modernización para alargar su vida operativa conocido como SLEP (Service Life Extension Program). Quizá las mayores virtudes de estos blindados sean su versatilidad de armamento y misiones y su relativa facilidad para ser aerotransportados allá donde se los necesite. Este es mi primera maqueta de un vehículo moderno.

Although my favourite AFV kits are those from WWII, I have recently discovered how equally inspiring more modern vehicles can be. One of them is the LAV-25, a wheeled lightweight on the modern battleground and the embryo of a large family of variants which have evolved into the present Strykers fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. So valuable the LAVs have become, that plenty of them are still in use in the U.S. Army after having undergone a modernization program, known as SLEP. Perhaps the most critical advantages of the LAVs may be their versatility for different roles and armament and the relative ease to be airlifted almost anywhere. This is my first kit of a modern AFV.

Technical & historical reference

La maqueta de Italeri es de los años 90 y ha sido superada hace mucho tiempo por Trumpeter primero y por los Stryker de AFV Club, pero mejorando algunas cosas aún puede convertirse en un modelo bastante aproximado al referente real. A su favor tiene el incluir parte del interior que, aunque no es correcto, permite al menos mostrarlo dejando las escotillas traseras abiertas. El encaje no es malo en general, la zona crítica que une ambas mitades del chasis longitudinalmente no presenta graves problemas (hay que repasarla, esos sí), sin embargo la parte posterior da algún problema y hay que usar masilla. Con todo, el error más evidente es la ausencia de hueco en la escotilla del comandante, que no resulta mayor inconveniente si no se quiere mostrarla abierta. Aunque también hay ruedas de resina en el mercado para reemplazar las de la maqueta, que vienen en dos mitades, en esta ocasión decidí emplear las de la caja.

Revisión

The Italeri kit dates back from the 1990s and has been long outmatched by Trumpeter first and then by the several AFV Club Stryker kits, but the modeller can still get a nice and realistic model if some parts are improved and some glitches mended. The kit includes part of the rear interior, which is a good point if you want to leave the back hatches open. Fitting is not bad and the build is quite easy and straightforward even for the beginner. Critical areas such as the hull halves fit OK, but the rear wall doesn't and shows a gap which needs some filling. The most evident mistake is that the commander's cupola has no access to the interior and the hollow has to be opened unless you want to show the hatch closed, of course. This time I used the wheels from the box even though there are resin replacement sets in the market.
