EL AVIÓN

  Este es el segundo modelo del Ki-43-I que realizo. Es idéntico al aparato de Kato, excepto en algún ligero detalle de la calca del panel de mandos. La tarea consiste, pues, en replicar la maqueta precedente intentando mejorar algunos detalles en lo posible. Intento construir la única referencia disponible en el modelo de Fujimi, un aparato del 59º Hiko-Sentai 1er Chutai estacionado en la base de Hankow (China) durante el verano de 1941. Modelísticamente intento también practicar el acabado con pintura plateada y de sus múltiples matices.

THE AIRCRAFT

  This is the second Ki-43-I kit I build. It is identical to Kato's fighter, except for a slight detail in the instrument panel decal. The task is mostly a repetition of that model but trying to improve some details as much as possible. The only version included in the kit is a fighter belonging to 59th Hiko-Sentai 1st Chutai from Hankow air base (China) in the summer of 1941. From a modeling viewpoint, I also want to practise silver finishings in model aircraft.

# CONSTRUCCIÓN - BUILDING

  Con varillas de Evergreen de 0'25 x 0'75 mm. comienzo la estructura interior por los largueros metálicos verticales, a los que he abierto 5 agujeros (en realidad llevaba 6, pero el suelo de la maqueta impide prolongar el larguero y con ello abrir el último). Por estos agujeros solían pasarse cables de los  instrumentos.

  I used Evergreen  0.010 x 0.030" strips to build the interior vertical ribs. The holes were really 6, but the last one can't be opened because of the cockpit floor. 

   

 

 

Los pedales y su barra de sujeción han sido sustituidos por otros de cobre

  The kit pedals and bar have been replaced by wire.

 

 

  De nuevo he usado Humbrol 78 (cockpit green) para el interior una vez terminada la estructura de largueros. Posteriormente fui añadiendo diversos elementos del interior de la carlinga realizados a scratch.

  I have used Humbrol 78 (cockpit green) for the interior once I finished the ribs. Then I scratchbuilt the different gadgets and  levers.

  Vista de algunos indicadores y controles realizados con plástico y cobre. Al asiento del piloto le añadí un pequeño cojín y los cinturones con pequeñas tiras de cobre.

 La zona del piloto terminada. He añadido unos finos cables para simular los que movían los alerones de cola.

  The pilot area finished. I have added some thin silver wire to simulate the rudder control cables.

  El interior también finalizado con cables de diferente grosor y color. También abrí dos agujeros para la salida de gases de las ametralladoras (1).

  The interior sides which were finished with wires of different size and colour I also opened  two oval holes of the exhaust port for gun gasses (1).

 

 

  El motor Ha-25 y diversos elementos terminados. La hélice lleva también abierto el trinquete de arranque. El panel (una calca) de mandos aún no ha sido colocado a la espera de cerrar el fuselaje. El tren de aterrizaje se detalló como explico en este artículo.

  The Ha-25 engine and different parts finished. I opened the propeller hub. The instrument panel (a decal) will be glued in place before the fuselage halves. The landing gear was detailed as I explain in this article.


  Vistas superior e inferior del modelo listo para pintar. Las alas no ajustan bien con el fuselaje especialmente en la zona inferior trasera. Lo mejor es trabajar el fuselaje y las alas por separado y comprobar reiteradamente el encaje antes de pegarlos definitivamente. Cortando y enrasando un poco la base no visible del fuselaje se consigue un ajuste suficiente, aunque no total, de la parte inferior y del perfil de las alas.

  Top and bottom view of the model ready for painting. The wings and fuselage don't fit well, especially in the bottom side. The best you can do is to work both apart, checking the fitting once and again before glueing. Trimming and sanding the fuselage base (not visible) you can get to match the rear edge of the wings and almost level the wing surfaces with the fuselage.

  El modelo fue lijado progresivamente con lijas de grano 1200 a 6000, y en algunas zonas hasta 10000, puesto que su color base será plateado.

  I sanded the model thoroughly  with a finer grain sandpaper each time. The grit ranged from 1200 to 6000 and even 10000 in some areas because the base color will be silver.

 Alrededor de todo el cubremotor se abrieron algunos remaches visibles.


  All around the cowling I opened some visible rivets.

 

# PINTURA - PAINTING

  En primer lugar pinté el timón y la parte inferior de los flaps con Gunze H62 IJN Gray. Tras enmascararlos, usé pintura de VSM en varias capas para el resto del avión. Una vez seca, aerografié una mezcla de negro y azul de Tamiya para pintar la banda antirreflectante del fuselaje. Esta zona fue luego aclarada con blanco de Tamiya muy diluido.

  First I painted the rudder and the bottom sides of the wing flaps with Gunze H62 IJN Gray. After masking then, I painted the model using the Spanish silver paint from VSM in thin layers. Once dried, I airbrushed a black and blue mix of Tamiya acrylics to paint the antiglaring band on the fuselage. Finally, I clear the panels up with a very thin coat of Tamiya white.

    A pasar de estar pintado en color brillante, opté por usar Future para colocar las calcas. Éstas resultaron algo gruesas y se adaptaron con dificultad a las líneas de panel. El símbolo del rayo a lo largo del fuselaje ya fue usado por el 59º Sentai en China cuando operaba con los Nakajima Ki-27, predecesores del Hayabusa.

    Although the model was painted silver, I chose to use Future to set the decals. These are a bit thick and difficult to adapt to panel lines. The lightning symbol along the fuselage had also been used by the 59th Sentai in China when the unit flew the Nakajima Ki-27s, forerunners of the Hayabusa.

    Maqueta panelada. El color está poco contrastado y tiene un brillo casi uniforme en todo el modelo.

    Panel lines finished. The silver colour has little contrast and is quite even all over the model.

 

 

  Para diferenciar algunos paneles sobre otros y añadir diferencias de tonalidad, di un lavado selectivo con óleo gris oscuro y diluyente de Humbrol sobre algunos de ellos. Cuando la solución estuvo casi seca, realicé suaves líneas de delante hacia atrás con un pincel plano.

  To contrast some panels and add some darker shades, I gave a pin wash on some of them with dark grey oil and Humbrol thinner. When they were almost dry, I made soft lines brushing the model backwards, in the supposed wing direction.

    Igualmente la zona del motor y los escapes recibieron un lavado con líneas más cortas y menos atenuadas.

    In the same way the cowling and the exhaust were washed but I made shorter and less faint brushes.

    A continuación procedí a realizar desgastes y manchas con óleos de colores negro, sombra tostada y blanco.

    Next I added some weathering and stains with oil colours: black, raw umber and white.
